Figure 1: Early design USAF Shade 84
Service Dress cap
The cap of Brigadier General William
Madison Garland was obtained through an auction on Ebay. The cap is a nice
example of an early USAF shade 84 item which dates back to the Korean War
period. The cap is not dated. However, the date of rank of the general
attaining the rank of general is 29 September 1951 and he retired 31 May 1954.
I believe its safe to say this cap dates back to 1951. The cap is identified to
the general and was produced by the Superior Uniform Cap Company of Chicago,
Illinois. In addition, the cap eagle carries the hallmark of NS Meyer of New
York with a twin shield logo and 9M in one of the shields. The NS Meyer 9M
shield is associated to the Korean War period.
